Growing up, I heard many tales of my grandmother’s life, before she was known as Mimo, and each narrative she told stuck with me and still impacts my thinking to this day. I wanted to celebrate Mimo’s wisdom and character, as well as capture the extraordinary within the ordinary. Hopefully I can inspire others to reflect on their own relationships with their elders and the untold stories that shaped their lives.

  • Originally from Hong Kong and currently living in New Jersey, Sau Chun shares and reflects upon stories from her life as she goes about her everyday activities — from preparing freshly made wontons to playing mahjong.

Lola captures her Mimo’s insightful thoughts about her past as well as her present state of happiness and inner tranquility in Mimo: Sau Chun’s Story. The documentary is filmed from Sau Chun’s perspective as she recalls events from her childhood up until now, as a grandmother to two grandchildren.

  • Lola Ellis is a Sophomore in the Class of 2026, majoring in Political Science and Film Studies.

  • “As a first-time filmmaker, I went into this process open-minded and intent on illuminating stories that wouldn't be told otherwise. I embraced the challenges I faced and allowed my creative process to take control.”
