This digital photograph shows a figure wading in dark water, wearing a white shirt, creating a stark contrast against the dark water. She reads a newspaper with intense concentration, her focus captured from the side.
Above her head, halos of light cascade against the water and reverberate throughout the frame. Each ripple represents a far away moment coming forward, culminating in the dense patterned background of the scene. The reader, however, is the true moment. The ripples come to her despite her lack of care for the sea, her eyes straight ahead at what she is reading about the world today.
Rather than focus on the past, no matter how enticing and beautiful, the figure focuses on the future at hand.

“Cina and I had a spontaneous shoot in the summer of 2022. We went to the Mini Res (Chandler Pond) when there were still lights, and she got into the water reading the newspaper. We later burned the newspaper.”
